Finding that the name Ethereal already belonged to another band, they decided to rename themselves as Lacuna Coil (which means “empty spiral” in Italian). Then in 1995 they changed their name to Ethereal, and signed a contract with the record company Century Media in 1997. The band was formed in 1994 under the name Sleep of Right. According to them, the band was influenced by groups such as Paradise Lost, Tiamat, Septic Flesh and Type O Negative, Black Sabbath, Sentenced, Depeche Mode, In Flames or Amorphis, among others although nowadays they have lost all relationship with this type of sounds. Lacuna Coil’s music was inspired by Gothic culture, using melodic guitar chords, alternating heavy vocals and a bit of pop influence. They were formerly known as Sleep of Right and Ethereal.
